Mercedes Benz releases surreal driving footage of insane looking electric car prototype

Mercedes Benz has released the actual driving footage of its insane electric vision AVTR car prototype inspired by Avatar.

The German automaker unveiled the concept earlier this year and we didn’t cover it on Electric, as it never seemed crazy to build.

That’s still the case, but Mercedes Benz has now released the actual footage of the electric vehicle and it’s pretty cool not to share it with you.

The idea behind the Vision AVTR is inspired by the movie Avatar Movie and the idea of “merging” with your vehicle – not unlike the film’s flying mountain banshee mixed with the navy.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to put yourself in the car like a banshee in an avatar.

The electric vehicle is controlled by a pulsing sensor in the center console:

Naturally, there is no such thing as being legal on the road today, but Mercedes Benz is trying to imagine the technologies of the future.

They wrote about the concept:

“Instead of the traditional steering wheel, the multifunctional control element in the center console allows human and machine to merge. By placing the hand on the control unit, the interior comes alive and the vehicle recognizes the driver by his heartbeat and breathing. “

About the powertrain, Mercedes-Benz says the vehicle is powered by “revolutionary battery technology based on graphene-based organic cell chemistry”:

“For the first time, the Vision AVTR concept vehicle is using a revolutionary battery technology based on graphene-based organic cell chemistry that is completely clean of rare earths and metals. The contents of the battery are compostable and therefore recyclable. In this way, electric mobility becomes independent of fossil resources. As a result, Mercedes-Benz demonstrates high consistency of the future circular economy in the field of raw materials. “

It’s probably just imaginative and the prototype’s electric powertrain is probably a regular electric test bed for prototypes.

But the wheels and steering system are quite special and enable ‘crab and walk’ just like the recently suffered GMC Hummer EV’s ‘crab mode’.

Check out Mercedes Benz’s newly released video about the Vision AVTR Concept for some footage of the features in action – it’s 13 minutes of your time:

Take the electric

Looking at the Tesla Cybertruck in action, it looks like the footage is CGI, but it is a real working prototype.

We’re not likely to see these features built into the production car anytime soon or anytime soon, but it’s still a great project in my opinion.
