If you’re like us from The AV ClubDear reader, then you don’t need an excuse to waste your time playing a silly browser-based video game. “Oh, I will spend five minutes playing this”, could you lie Say to yourself, “just for a little mental break.” Suddenly it’s been three hours and you’re still playing like rats on the walls and screaming, weren’t you supposed to have filed that story down now?

So despite the fact that it is obviously a promotion for Netflix, of course we are going to write about the “top-down browser-based video game” that they have released to celebrate The old guard, the new serpentine action movie starring Charlize Theron and Kiki Layne. (We liked it!) And while we’re not covering it because the game comes with a chance to win an “immortal” Netflix subscription, we’re not going to minimize that part either, because if you accidentally spend an afternoon playing a game, meant to play for up to five minutes, You can also have a chance to be rewarded for your choices.

The reason for the trick is pretty simple: Old Guard is a group of undercover operatives who also happen to be immortal. In the film, Theron plays Andy or Andromache from Scythia; in the game, it’s you, wielding his trusty Labrys (a giant ax). If you die, it’s okay! Like Andy and the members of Chumbawamba, they knock you down, but you get up again. In the game, death only slows you down a bit.

Now Netflix can’t give you an immortal subscription because that assumes Netflix will never die, and everything dies, okay? Instead, the winner will essentially get Netflix free for most of his or her mortal life, which is probably a pretty solid prize (assuming the world lasts at least a few more years). But of course there is a catch: It is a one-weekend deal, July 17-19. Whoever has the highest score at the end of the weekend wins the prize.
