Massachusetts health officials on Sunday announced another 14 new coronavirus deaths, bringing the statewide tally to 8,514.
Officials also reported another 286 newly confirmed cases of the virus, totaling at least 112,459 in the entire community since the pandemic began. Sunday’s data is based on 17,152 new molecular tests, according to the Department of Public Health.
State officials also reported 43 new probable cases of the virus, for a total of at least 8,581 probable cases. At least 221 people have died from diseases linked to probable cases, officials said.
More than 5 million people have spread the virus across the nation, according to a database compiled by The New York Times. More than 162,000 Americans have died since Sunday afternoon.
The Times said business numbers are going up in many places across the country, including states that opened earlier than others. The number of patients in the hospital and the percentage of people testing positive are also on the rise in many states, so increased testing is not the only reason for the nation’s overall growth, the Times reported .
In Massachusetts, there are currently 375 people with COVID-19 hospitals, health officials said.
Gov. Charlie Baker recently announced that state officials will indefinitely postpone the definition of Phase 3 second investigation into state investigations into ‘clusters’ of outbreaks, and instances of parties and other gatherings at which people do not have the stateless mask mandate follow.
Baker also has plans to reduce the limit on open meetings from 100 to 50 people on Tuesday. The limit on indoor meetings remains at 25 people. A new COVID enforcement and intervention team will work with local law enforcement agencies and state agencies to ensure residents and businesses comply with social distance and capacity constraints aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.
The state will expand its free testing program through Sept. 12. The initiative has provided free testing for 17 communities with higher positive test rates than the statewide average, including communities of color and immigrant populations that are typically at higher risk.
