KUALA LUMPUR: The government is still deliberating on all aspects of the calls to form a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate the alleged misappropriation of funds in Tabung Haji (TH), Parliament heard.

The Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Seri, Dr. Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, said that the cabinet discussed the matter on August 18.

“The government is carefully considering and analyzing (the issue), including the legal aspects of it and how to implement it to ensure that the training achieves all of its objectives as expected,” Abdul Rahim (BN-Balear) told Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez during question time.

Azeez, a former president of TH, has asked the government to indicate steps to establish an RCI in Tabung Haji in order to stop any political controversy over the institution.

Zulkifli said that the government understands the need to have an authorized body to observe and review all transactions carried out by TH.

He also stressed that all the measures taken by the government are aimed at finding a solution that can be accepted by all parties.

“The most important thing is to ensure that Tabung Haji’s management is in line with its interests as an institution owned by the Muslim community in the country.

“I hope that all parliamentarians will give their full confidence to the government to protect the sanctity of this Islamic institution,” he said.

In addition to the proposed sale of two subsidiaries of TH Plantations Bhd owning 6,514ha of land for RM170,000 in Sarawak, Zulkifli said that so far TH Plantations has not yet made any formal public announcements on such transactions.

“What has been raised above will be carefully reviewed,” he said.
