KUALA LUMPUR: Special Adviser to the Prime Minister of Public Health, Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, said that it was not impossible for Malaysia to achieve zero daily positive cases of Covid-19 by implementing the National Covid-19 Immunization Program.
He said that if 80% of Malaysians get vaccinated, the country will achieve the “herd immunity” target.
However, he said that during the implementation of the vaccination program, people must also play a role by continuing to adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) established to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
“I think it is not impossible to achieve zero Covid-19 (daily cases), but we try to reduce the number of cases as best we can and try to protect ourselves first.
“Achieving zero cases does not depend only on the vaccine. People must also play a very important role in maintaining standard public health operating procedures, such as wearing face masks and practicing physical distancing until the number of cases reaches zero and maintaining it for a certain period of time, ”he said. in the “Malaysia Petang Ini” broadcast today live on Bernama TV.
Jemilah further commented that the National Covid-19 Vaccination Program was not mandatory and will not be imposed on Malaysians.
“We have to understand that the vaccine will save many people from the disease (Covid-19) which is quite serious.
“Therefore, protecting oneself is a way that we can protect all people and also think about our relatives who are elderly and have a higher risk of contracting diseases,” he said.
On the impact of anti-vaccines on the national immunization program, Jemilah said those groups existed all over the world, but they were very small compared to those who understand the science and support vaccination.
