KOTA KINABALU: Former Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng criticized Vice Minister of Communications and Multimedia Zahidi Zainul Abidin for his mistake with the Sabahan student who had to climb a tree to get Internet access to take her exam.
Noting that Zahidi had lowered himself by targeting a student, the DAP secretary general said that Zahidi was not fit to be vice minister.
He also compared Zahidi’s ignorance of the real situation in Sabah with a lack of respect for the plight of residents in the state.
“They can attack me (as a politician), but doing it with a university student is really inappropriate,” he told reporters after a meeting between DAP leaders and the Likas people here today.
Zahidi had apologized for the comments he made in the Dewan Negara about Sabahan student Veveonah Mosibin, who said in a video that went viral three months ago that she had to climb a tree to connect to the Internet to introduce herself to her. online exam. .
Zahidi, the MP from Padang Besar, had previously told Dewan Negara that the girl did not appear for any exams at the prescribed time and that she only made the video to get more views on YouTube.
Issuing an apology, he said he had received “inaccurate information” on the matter.
Veveonah later took to Facebook and said she was “hurt and sad” about the whole thing. She said that she had worked hard to prepare for the exam for many months and that she did not expect her video to go viral.
Meanwhile, Lim questioned the current government’s success in implementing the National Fiberization and Connectivity Plan (NFCP) that was launched last year.
In addition to the Pitas district, where Veveonah is from, he said the NFCP also focuses on other areas such as Keningau, Papar, Tenom, Kunak, Semporna, Beluran, Tongod, Tuaran, Kudat and Kota Marudu.
According to a report by Bernama, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said that the Kampung Sapatalang communications tower, the village of Veveonah in Pitas, would be among the projects undertaken under the Jalinan Digital Negara (Jendela) plan to improve the communications infrastructure in Sabah from 2020 to 2022..
Jendela will replace the NFCP that was written prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting increase and changes in internet usage.
In another development, Lim said that DAP would continue to support Warisan president Shafie Apdal, who is also the interim prime minister, and expressed confidence that it could clear Sabah from monetary policy.
He said the party was in favor of Shafie’s commitment to ending the culture of buying from elected officials.
“Shafie will be the hope for the country in cleaning up politics in Malaysia – no more monetary policy and jumps (between) parties.
“If Sabah can rectify this, so can Malaysia … Sabah can lead the way,” he added.
