Zahid to Umno members: Stop making demands, we are not the dominant party in Perikatan

PETALING JAYA: Umno President Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says the party is not in a “dominant” position in Perikatan Nasional and should not require government appointments.

He said there were some so-called “main players” in the party who believed that the party should have “important” ministries or even more places in the administration.

“As party president, I feel the same, but the reality is that we are not the dominant party.

“We have to accept this reality. The mindset is as if we are leading the government as before in Barisan Nasional.”

“The reality is that we are (only) part of the government, although we contribute to its formation with a large number (of parliamentarians) together with PAS.

“We should not blame decision makers or shoulder their shoulders because we must put pressure on them to get what we should have.”

“I think there must be willpower at the bottom,” he said in an interview broadcast on Umno’s Facebook page along with the 74th anniversary of the party on Monday (May 11).

Umno and Barisan, together with PAS and Gabungan Perikatan Sarawak (GPS), formed Perikatan with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and several PKR lawmakers who left their party in February.

Zahid said many of the party members lacked willpower and eventually crossed paths with other parties during the 22-month period when they were part of the Opposition.

He said that many party leaders were brought to court on various charges.

The former deputy prime minister faces 47 charges, 12 of them for criminal trust abuse (CBT), eight for corruption and 27 for money laundering with funds belonging to Yayasan Akalbudi.

He said the party did not close the door on negotiations to determine Perikatan’s position in the future, although the coalition was formed only after the fall of the Pakatan Harapan government.

Zahid also called on members of his party to stop personal political movements, as these had created many problems.

He said the party would continue to face other challenges and be attacked from the outside, but the most dangerous threat was from within.

“Please stop. Enough. The road ahead is still very long,” he said.
