BUKIT MERTAJAM: A PPBM leader said today that Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s recent observation that his party’s MPs were free to do whatever they wanted was unacceptable, based on the opposition’s claim that it has enough support in Parliament to form a new government.

PPBM Supreme Council member Rosol Wahid said that Zahid’s statement gave the impression that he had lost control of the party and its members.

“As a leader, you must be in command of your members. Now, it seems that he does not have the support and has no power to control his leaders and members, “he said on the sidelines of an event here today.

“Zahid should not have made such a comment that Umno MPs are free to do whatever they want.

“You may have different intentions in making such a statement. But as the leader of a party, he is not okay. “

Rosol, who is deputy minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, said it is therefore not surprising that many criticize Zahid for the comment.

He said that he had asked his Umno friends about the talk that some Umno MPs would support PKR President Anwar Ibrahim and they said it was mere rumor.

He said Anwar should seek a vote of no confidence in Parliament, rather than making pointless announcements.

“I feel like Anwar’s announcement is just a political move for the Sabah elections. This, however, has caused a stock market crash and unnecessary panic among the people, which is not good for our country, ”he said.

Anwar claimed on Wednesday that he could form a new government with strong and formidable majority support from parliamentarians, who he said were mostly made up of Malaysian-Muslim elected representatives.

While several Umno and BN leaders were quick to dispel rumors of defections to Anwar’s side, Zahid said he had been informed that many Umno deputies supported the opposition leader.

He said he respected their position and could not prevent them from supporting Anwar, adding that BN had never officially joined PN.

More sales recorded

On the other hand, Rosol said that Malaysians with higher wages were spending more in shopping malls, especially on high-end products during the last two months.

He said that reports from shopping malls like Suria KLCC in Kuala Lumpur had shown a rebound in sales of streetwear such as Gucci, Ferragamo and Chanel.

“The increase in sales for the M40 and T20 income groups is due to the fact that they can no longer travel abroad,” he said.

“Premium outlets are posting better sales in the past two months, thanks to the government’s effort to encourage people to spend more to help accelerate the recovery of the economy,” he said at the launch of the Buy Malaysia and Malaysia program. It comes out at the Mydin Mall here.

He also said that the products of local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) had become widely available with the participation of online shopping platforms Shoppee, Lazada and PG Mall.

Products for SMEs were also available at 801 Petronas stations across the country, he added.
