Larry Sng, who left PKR over the weekend to support Muhyiddin Yassin, says he is not bound by any agreement with the party.

KUCHING: Julau MP Larry Sng, who resigned from PKR over the weekend to back Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, said he is not bound by any agreement with the party as he had contested the last general election as an independent candidate. .

He was responding to the statement by PKR Secretary General Saifuddin Nasution Ismail that the party would sue him and Tebrau MP Steven Choong for resigning in support of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

PKR has since fired the duo.

Sng said he had successfully snatched the parliamentary seat from Julau during GE14 before being invited to join PKR.

He said he did not compete under the PKR ticket and had no ties to the match. “So it doesn’t apply to me if they took legal action,” he told FMT.

He said that when Lubok Antu MP Jugah Muyang resigned from PKR last year and pledged his support for Muhyiddin, no legal action was taken against him as he had also won as an independent before joining PKR.

In 2018, Sng garnered 10,105 votes to win the Kulau seat, defeating four-term incumbent Joseph Salang Gandum of the Sarawak People’s Party, who garnered 8,174 votes.

He joined PKR shortly after the elections and took over as chairman of the state party after Selangau MP Baru Bian resigned from the party last year.

On Sunday, Sng confirmed that he had left the party to endorse Muhyiddin. He said he was unable to serve effectively due to lack of funds as he was in opposition.

“I won as an independent and have returned as an independent after consulting my constituents. There is nothing wrong with that, ”he said.

Saifuddin had said that the central PKR leadership had discussed legal action against Sng and Choong, as they had betrayed the voters’ mandate and left the party.
