Workers’ quarters at the rubber glove factory in Perak are congested

LUMUT (Bernama): Nearly 1,000 workers have been found housed in the workers’ rooms of a rubber glove factory in two separate locations here.

The facilities also do not have accommodation certificates from the Peninsular Malaysia Department of Labor (JTK).

The director of the Legal and Compliance Division, Zaini Yaakob, said that the conditions clearly did not comply with the provisions of the Minimum Standards of Housing and Services for Workers Act of 1990 (Law 446).

“In fact, our inspection showed congestion where a bedroom, which should only have two occupants, is shared by more than four workers,” he said after conducting inspections in both worker rooms on Friday (January 15).

Zaini said the six blocks in the two workers’ rooms were clean and suitable for occupation.

However, some requirements were still missing, such as beds and mattresses, while some beds were placed in the living rooms and not in the bedrooms.

As a result of the operation, JTK would open an investigation document on the employer or centralized accommodation provider that did not comply with the provisions of the Act, it said.

He said the three-hour operation began at 3 p.m. and was carried out based on complaints from the public about congestion at the two facilities.

“Further investigations are still underway and discussions will be held with employers to take steps to overcome the problem in the short term,” he added.

He said that the three-hour integrated operation that included JTK, the police and various agencies, including the Ministry of Industry and International Trade and the local authority, were carried out at the workers’ premises in Kampung Acheh, Setiawan. – Bernama
