KUALA LUMPUR: Indian authorities have identified a Malaysia-based Rohingya terror cell that is planning to launch attacks in various states in India.
According to a report by the Times of India website, the cell is led by a woman suspected of being sent to Myanmar from Malaysia earlier this year.
The woman was reportedly trained for the attacks in Myanmar and her group was supposed to infiltrate India via Bangladesh in mid to late December, probably targeting Ayodhya, Bodhgaya, Punjab and Srinagar states.
The news portal said from documents it had seen, an Indian intelligence establishment is said to have intercepted financial links between the cell and the controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik (pix).
It said a suspicious transaction amounting to about $ 200,000 (RM810,000) dates back to a Kuala Lumpur-based Rohingya leader identified as Mohammed Naseer and Zakir, who is wanted by Indian authorities and resides in Malaysia with permanent residence status. .
The document claims that a suspect from Chennai, likely a hawala merchant or money changer, received half of the funds.
On Friday, the intelligence system alerted police and state intelligence offices in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal to intensify their surveillance, putting it on high alert.
theSun reached out to Bukit Aman yesterday for comment on the allegations, but federal police have yet to respond.
However, Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador, who spoke with Bernama, said that the police have not received any official report on the matter.
The police welcome information on the matter and constantly monitor any developments involving terrorists, he added.
“The police have always received the cooperation of law enforcement agencies in foreign countries to address national security problems,” he said.
Abdul Hamid added that the police record in addressing any form of terrorist threats has been good.
