SIBU: Gym operators are asking the government to allow them to resume business, as they have been severely affected by the movement control order (MCO) that went into effect on March 18.

Solid Gym operator Lau Kah Yii said he hoped the state government would investigate his situation and allow the gyms to resume operations soon.

He said they were under increasing pressure as their financial resources ran out each day.

Gyms have posted zero income for more than two months.

Your business is heavily reliant on membership dues, but gym members have not paid during this period.

Despite this, Lau said, they still had to pay the rent, utility bills and wages that amount to up to five figures per month.

With the conditional MCO extended to June 9, traders wondering how long they can resist.

“We cannot move forward, as we still have to pay the bills and staff salary every month. We still have to pay the full rental fee during this difficult period.

“Even independent instructors in our gym are affected by the mandatory closure of the gym due to Covid-19,” said Lau.

He said he had given his staff, especially part-time workers, loans to overcome this difficult time.

“Many of our members have asked me when we will open. I can answer them about other things, but not about this, since I don’t know either.

“We, like other companies, have to comply with the government’s instructions,” he said.

“We are not against applying the conditional MCO, but since most of the positive cases treated at Sibu Hospital are imported, we should be allowed to resume operations now,” he said.

Lau said they would strictly follow standard operating procedure (SOP) for gyms if given the green light to reopen.

“We will follow basic SOP like taking clients’ body temperatures, providing hand sanitizer and ensuring social distancing,” he said.

“During this period, we just want to maintain our gym and break even,” he said.

An independent instructor at another gym, John Lam said he had been losing income.

“Income from my work at the gym is significant. I hope we can resume normal operations soon,” he said.

Sibu Bodybuilding and Weightlifting Association President Chia Soon Seong also said he hoped the gyms could reopen.

“We know that the gymnasium could be a risky place for the spread of the virus and that we must comply with the government’s order. For Sibu, I hope we can reopen when phase five of the MCO ends on June 9,” he said. said.
