PETALING JAYA: The final grand gala night of Miss Plus World Malaysia 2020 (MPWM 2020) went off without a hitch on Saturday (January 2) despite protests from groups linked to religion calling for its cancellation.

Melissa Mohan Tyndall was crowned the winner and will represent Malaysia at the Miss Plus World pageant in Texas in the United States later this year.

During the two-hour event, two other winners, including a Muslim contestant, were also crowned.

Shakti Chhabra won the Miss Plus Intercontinental Malaysia 2020 title, while Jastina Mohd Junus received the Miss Plus World Humanitarian Ambassador title.

Jastina said she was proud that all her charitable work had been recognized.

He also believed that the negative reaction to the contest had been “a misunderstanding.”

“As you can see tonight, we are wearing underwear with long dresses. So it’s not a problem.

“I still wear hijab, and I have no objection to maintaining my image of a woman wearing hijab,” she said on an online portal.

Jastina added that the purpose of the contest was to highlight the sense of empowerment that comes from sisterhood ties, rather than the appearance of a woman, and therefore, she hoped it could be performed again in the future.

Previously, Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim) had demanded the cancellation of the Miss Plus World Malaysia 2020 Grand Gala Final.

Yadim President Nasrudin Hassan submitted a memorandum to local authorities, questioning why such an event was allowed amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Muslim wing PAS also criticized the pageant, saying the event is contrary to the moral values ​​of Islam and Malaysia.

In a Facebook post, the event organizer said the contest was aimed at raising awareness against bodily shame and stalking.

The organizer, in his defense, also said that his contests intentionally ignored “trivial” activities such as requiring participants to wear bathing suits and instead focused on celebrating, promoting and elevating beauty, intelligence and confidence. of plus size women.
