PETALING JAYA: A vice minister has taken to social media to criticize the government’s Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations next week.

Deputy Minister of National Unity Ti Lian Ker said SOPs must be rectified immediately.

“Someone has been totally wrong here. This POE must be removed and rectified quickly! This is not a POE, but a forbidden city, “he posted on Facebook.

Similarly, many other politicians and others have criticized the government’s SOPs, which were said to be culturally deaf and unnecessary.

Many had even joked about SOPs for the CNY reunion dinner, calling it, by definition, just another family dinner at home.

Chief Security Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob today announced SOPs for CNY celebrations, which among others indicated that reunion dinners and religious ceremonies will only be allowed between family members living in the same home.

At the same time, he also said that night markets (pass malam), hair salons, hair salons and car wash services will be able to operate until 10 pm starting tomorrow.

Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming tweeted: “Ismail Sabri says that the CNY reunion dinner is only allowed for those who stay in the same house. Errrr … sane people call that regular dinner, not CNY reunion dinner.

“At least allow families in the same district or area to get together for the CNY reunion dinner (maximum 10 or 15 people).”

Meanwhile, comedian Dr. Jason Leong said on his official Facebook page: “So during this MCO (motion control order), I can’t visit my parents for CNY as we live in different houses, but that’s okay. My family and extended relatives are gathering to at least say hello and exchange views … at the nearest malam pass. “

Former vice minister of agriculture and agriculture-based industry, Sim Tze Zin, said the SOP of the Chinese New Year did not make any sense.

“Families living in the same district can visit each other now. During CNY it is prohibited. Let’s wait for the U-turn again! “he said on Twitter.

Another Twitter user @mthanean also joked about SOPs, saying that CNY now stands for “Celebrate Next Year.”

User @jsadiq also called the standard operating procedures “a joke” and asked why it was necessary to establish special procedures for family members living in the same house.

“SOP CNY is a joke. When is a reunion dinner not a reunion dinner? When they are the same family members in the same house. Don’t meet daily? Why is there a special SOP?

“Same with visits. Why should a family from a house be visited? They live togetherlah. ‘Gila’ (crazy) “.

He also noted that the reunion dinner falls on the eve of the CNY, that is, February 11, but the SOPs were declared to be applicable for the first two days of the CNY.

Kampung Tunku Assemblyman Lim Yi Wei also criticized the move and asked the MCA to advise Perikatan Nasional (PN) on cultural awareness.

“Your idea of ziarah = knocking on the door of each room since it is also ‘sixi rumah’?

“We don’t really see Chinese opera either. @MCAHQ, could you advise PN to have some cultural awareness? “, Said.
