PETALING JAYA: A vice minister has taken to social media to criticize the government’s Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations next week.
Deputy Minister of National Unity Ti Lian Ker said SOPs must be rectified immediately.
“Someone has been totally wrong here. This POE must be removed and rectified quickly! This is not a POE, but a forbidden city, “he posted on Facebook.
Similarly, many other politicians and others have criticized the government’s SOPs, which were said to be culturally deaf and unnecessary.
Many had even joked about SOPs for the CNY reunion dinner, calling it, by definition, just another family dinner at home.
Chief Security Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob today announced SOPs for CNY celebrations, which among others indicated that reunion dinners and religious ceremonies will only be allowed between family members living in the same home.
At the same time, he also said that night markets (pass malam), hair salons, hair salons and car wash services will be able to operate until 10 pm starting tomorrow.

Another Twitter user @mthanean also joked about SOPs, saying that CNY now stands for “Celebrate Next Year.”
User @jsadiq also called the standard operating procedures “a joke” and asked why it was necessary to establish special procedures for family members living in the same house.

He also noted that the reunion dinner falls on the eve of the CNY, that is, February 11, but the SOPs were declared to be applicable for the first two days of the CNY.
Kampung Tunku Assemblyman Lim Yi Wei also criticized the move and asked the MCA to advise Perikatan Nasional (PN) on cultural awareness.
