One of the most significant features of the new iPhone 12 is also one of the most rudimentary: magnets.
By installing three small magnets behind the back cover of the phone, Apple has allowed owners to quickly snap on multiple cases, while the wireless charging pad no longer misaligns and always locks satisfactorily into place.
But the introduction of these so-called Magsafe features comes with a significant downside for anyone who likes to keep their phone in the same pocket as their bank cards or passport.
Although magnets are small, they are quite strong, which means that they can theoretically destroy credit cards.
“Do not put credit cards, security credentials, passports or key fobs between your iPhone and the MagSafe charger, because this could damage the magnetic strips or RFID chips on those items,” Apple warned on its help page.
At the very least, you’ll want to remove the cards from any wallet cases you have for your iPhone and store them elsewhere. Being near wireless charging could also be dangerous for magnetic stripes and other data-carrying objects. – dpa
