Hong Kong actor and director Stephen Chow was in the news recently after he testified in a lawsuit brought against him by his ex-girlfriend Alice Yu, who accused him of failing to pay his commission of more than HK $ 70 thousand (RM36.7 thousand ).

Hong Kong actress and host Carol Cheng, 63, took the opportunity to clear things up about a misconception that she despised Chow, 58.

According to the rumor, Cheng had allegedly told Chow years ago, before he made it big, that he would never become a leading actor. The two reportedly did not speak to each other for many years as a result.

However, Cheng recently clarified that he had never said such a thing to Chow.

On his radio show When I was young I listened to the radio, Cheng took the initiative to address the rumor without being asked.

Cheng, once called one of the four pillars of the TVB station, along with Liza Wang, Nancy Sit and the late Lydia Sum, said that he already admired Chow’s talent when he hosted the children’s show 430 Space Shuttle (1982 to 1989 ).

Cheng and Chow acted together on the television series. The price of growing (1987), which also starred Alex Man, Francis Ng, and Kathy Chow.

Cheng said that he didn’t usually chat with Chow in private, but once when they were waiting to film a scene, Chow asked him if he had a future in acting.

Cheng, who was already a star at the time after acting in series like The good, the bad and the ugly (1979 to 1980) and The fight of two brothers (1985 to 1986), he recalled telling Chow, “You have the potential, work hard.”

However, the version of his comments reported in the media was “You better not do it,” and the media said that Cheng despised Chow.

Cheng said she was still angry with the magazine that first reported the rumor for not checking with it before it published the news.

Chow left TVB later, and Cheng recalled working with Chow just one more time. She said there was no need for her to explain it to Chow at the time, as she was misquoted by the media.

After leaving TVB, Chow became an established comedian in films such as Fight school (1991), Forbidden City Police (1996) and King of comedy (1999).

Later he devoted himself to directing, winning Best Director for Kung Fu movement (2004) at the Golden Horse Awards and directing other films such as CJ7 (2008) and The mermaid (2016). – The Straits Times / Asia News Network
