PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Azmin Ali criticized opposition lawmakers for claiming that the country would descend into dictatorship if a state of emergency were declared.
Calling it irresponsible and unfit for a parliamentarian, he said the Opposition was sowing fear and resentment among the Rakyat rather than joining the government’s efforts to combat the pandemic.
“Let’s be clear. Our real enemy is Covid-19 and we must appreciate the sacrifices and selfless efforts of our avant-gardes who have worked day and night.
“I call on all political leaders of all party lines to join forces with the rakyat and the Government at this time of great challenge to remain as one, united and unified in the fight against this unprecedented pandemic, to stop put aside politics and other interests for the greater good of the health, well-being and prosperity of the nation, “he said in a statement Saturday (October 24).
He also attacked the opposition leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, for his bid to become prime minister.
On Friday (October 23), Anwar had asked the government to provide full transparency before declaring an emergency.
“It is very regrettable that the leader of the Opposition chose to stoke instability and sow hatred when he told the whole world that he had obtained” a convincing and formidable majority in Parliament “to form a new Government and call Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to resign, “Azmin said.
He noted that the country is facing the most severe health crisis in recent history, the government, working closely with the rakyat and all leaders, is doing everything possible to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.
“In these circumstances, it is fair and appropriate that we stand united behind all efforts to mitigate the pandemic and flatten the curve while ensuring minimal disruption to the economy,” Azmin said.
