YESTERDAY HITAM: The public received a 30-day extension until September 30 to renew the expired road tax and driver’s license, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri, Dr. Wee Ka Siong.

The deadline to renew the road tax and driver’s license that expired since the motion control order (MCO) began on March 18 was originally scheduled to end on August 31.

Dr Wee said the latest decision was made after taking into consideration the financial difficulties and problems faced by people, whose income has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I continue to receive comments from the public about your financial difficulties, which is why I have decided to exercise my authority as Minister of Transportation to extend the payment period until the end of September.

“With this extension, there is no reason why they should not renew their road tax and driver’s license,” Dr. Wee said at a Department of Highway Transportation (JPJ) community program here yesterday.

Dr. Wee said the ministry had also decided to extend the 70% discount for citations until September 30.

“As we are still in the recovery period for the MCO, it is understandable that some people find it difficult to make payments.

“As of Friday, around RM7 thousand have been collected in summons payments.

“I think this one-month extension is a reasonable amount of time for them to find the means to clear the payment as soon as possible,” he added.

According to Dr. Wee, at least 98% of the summons payments were made over the counter.

“It may be the Malay culture to make payments over the counter, but I must remind the public that the online payment option is available. This can save you the hassle of waiting in long lines, ”he said.

On another topic, Dr. Wee said the ministry was looking to repackage JPJ’s outreach programs, including group driving tests, and uphold traffic rules and regulations, especially in suburbs and rural areas.

“We want to use these programs to get closer to the rakyat and also educate them about the importance of having a driver’s license,” he added.
