PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says the government will not engage in any form of extremism that could threaten racial harmony, public peace and the national security of the nation.

Muhyiddin said that strict measures based on the law will be taken against anyone who spreads extremist ideologies or practices, regardless of their race.

“In our effort to defend the sanctity of Islam and the purity of the faith of Muslims, I want to remind that we cannot take extreme approaches that may cause discomfort in our plural society.”

Malaysia should always prioritize restraint and harmony in race and religious relations, he said in a speech at an event here today.

He said that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government under his leadership will be more sensitive and receptive to the voices of Muslim NGOs, adding that he believes that this created space will benefit the Muslim community in the nation.

He said that several Muslim NGO leaders had met with him and expressed concern about the main challenges facing Muslims in Malaysia and around the world.

“This includes concerns about new developments in thinking and lifestyles that are seen as a threat to the faith and morals of Muslims. This includes the influence of liberal ideologies and Western secularism.

“This ideology does not see religion as something important in the life of humanity. Instead, it glorifies unlimited individual freedoms to the point of violating Islamic law, ”he said.
