Senior police officers with suspected links to the Macau scam and online gambling syndicates have been assigned posts that are not confidential.

KUALA LUMPUR: The police will open an Investigation Document (IP) on the alleged involvement of superior officers and policemen with detained persons in connection with the Macau scam and the online gambling union.

This will be based on information from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Police Inspector General Abdul Hamid Bador said today.

He said police were waiting for more information from the MACC to complete investigations into the case.

“Currently, senior police officers with ties to the Macau scam and online gambling have been assigned posts that are not sensitive, but that doesn’t mean it will end there.

“I will consider more actions when I have the information,” he told Bernama.

Meanwhile, the director of Bukit Aman’s Department of Integrity and Standards Compliance, Zamri Yahya, said that so far 24 officers and policemen are being investigated in connection with the case.

“We are in the process of registering statements and collecting evidence regarding his alleged involvement in the case.

“Once we have completed the investigation, we will make recommendations to the disciplinary authorities for sanctions if there is clear and solid evidence of their participation in the union,” he added.

The director of the Bukit Aman Department of Management, Ramli Din, said sensitive positions in the police force could be rotated more frequently, for just three years for each position, compared to the current five years. This will help prevent misconduct among senior officers and law enforcement personnel.

“Rotation by changing officers for sensitive positions will take place at all levels, involving high-ranking police officers down to the lowest level.”

He defined sensitive posts as those that involved operations and raids.

He said background checks and records are always conducted on members of the police force to determine their eligibility and integrity for positions.

Last Monday, Bernama reported that high-ranking police officers were among those who took action on suspicion of having ties to people arrested in connection with the Macau scam syndicate and online gambling.

The case triggered a major reshuffle in the police force, involving more than 20 police officers, including senior officers.
