PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye (Photo) has called for more proactive measures to prevent recurrence of water supply interruptions and suggested that more severe penalties be imposed on repeat offenders.
The president of the Alliance for Safe Community said that the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas), Air Selangor management and other agencies should be held accountable for the incidents, as it was their responsibility to ensure that they were avoided.
“Nearly 1.2 million water account holders have gone dry since Friday (September 4) in 1,292 areas of the Klang Valley during the worst-case scenario so far this year of a water supply interruption. water due to severe water pollution in Sungai Selangor.
“It is reported that this situation will last another four days.
“This is totally unacceptable and a plague on the provider of an essential service,” it said in a statement on Saturday (September 5).
Lee condemned the number of unscheduled water outages, most of which occurred in the Klang Valley over the past year and a half.
The factory that caused the recent water contamination in Sungai Selangor was not a first-time violator, Lee noted.
“Previously, the owner was fined RM60,000 for a similar offense.
“Why didn’t law enforcement officials subsequently prevent a recurrence by conducting regular checks at the factory to ensure compliance with existing rules and regulations?” I ask.
Lee called for an end to the indifferent attitude, emphasizing that water disruptions are affecting the vulnerable.
“They should stop making excuses or offering standard explanations to say that they are investigating after its occurrence.
“What has happened to the previous cases? Why have the final reports not been made public? What measures have been put in place to assure the rakyat that it will not be repeated?” he questioned.
Lee urged authorities to take action in advance of an incident and suggested imposing mandatory imprisonment for habitual offenders.
