Thomas Partey completed a dramatic move to Arsenal on the day of the deadline in a move that marks a new era in North London.
The 27-year-old left Atletico Madrid when his £ 45m buyout clause was fulfilled just over half an hour before the 11pm deadline on Monday night.
Partey, who will wear jersey number 18 at the Emirates, was described by new boss Mikel Arteta as “a dynamic midfielder with great energy”.
In addition to the endurance displays of power, his technical skills are sometimes overlooked, and the Ghana international had an 89% dribbling success rate last season, the best in Europe.
And it was his midfield masterclass against reigning Champions League champion Liverpool at Anfield that really allowed the Ghanaian to announce himself as one of the best in the world at his position.
Having led the first leg at Wanda Metropolitano in March, the pressure was on Partey and his Atleti teammates to cope with pressure from raucous Kop.
But Jurgen Klopp’s midfielder trio of Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain simply couldn’t get close to the elegant ballplayer.
The Spanish club announced that Arsenal had paid the termination clause for Partey at LaLiga headquarters with minutes to spare.
They said in a statement: “LaLiga informed Atlético de Madrid at 11:28 pm on Monday that Arsenal representatives have paid the termination clause for Thomas Partey at the sports association’s headquarters.
Therefore, the player has unilaterally terminated his contract with our club, which lasted until June 30, 2023 ”.
Arsenal later confirmed the signing a quarter of an hour after the transfer window closed.
Partey, who has been capped 27 times for his country, scoring 10 goals, made 35 appearances last season when Atlético finished only behind Real Madrid and Barcelona in the Spanish top flight.
