MANCHESTER UNITED forward Anthony Martial was sent off for slapping Erik Lamela, but the Frenchman appeared to be elbowed in the neck first.

United’s home clash against Tottenham was dramatic enough with three goals in the first eight minutes.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team, already 2-1 down, was reduced to ten men when Martial lost his cool.

The Spurs were preparing to take a corner when the Frenchman collided with Lamela.

Replays showed that the Spurs midfielder fell to the ground after Martial put his hand to his face.

But just before this, when the pair pushed into the box, Lamela’s elbow seemed to make contact with Martial’s neck.

Referee Anthony Taylor brandished the red card, but Sky Sports players and commentators weren’t sure who had gotten an early bath.

Taylor had VAR in his ear, but the officer seemed certain he was right, and it was Martial who was sent marching down the tunnel.

The 24-year-old looked as stunned as his teammates as he contemplated an early finish to their game.

United trailed 2-1 at this point, and Bruno Fernandes’ second-minute penalty was disallowed by goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Heung-min Son.

And just two minutes after Martial’s red card, Harry Kane crashed into home plate for 3-1.

Things got even worse for Solskjaer’s shocked troops when Son scored his second as the Spurs went into the break 4-1 up.

Former Liverpool tough player Graeme Souness was furious at Lamela’s reaction to the melee.

He told Sky Sports: “Pathetic. A tickle in the chops.

“Is that what the English game is about?

“Lamela will sleep well tonight because she thinks she will have done a great job for her team.

“It’s not us, but that’s in our game now.”
