KUALA LUMPUR: The heated exchange between the government and the opposition continued during a debate with a deputy minister accused of displaying an obscene gesture during today’s Dewan Rakyat session.

RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) alleged that Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodity Industry Willie Mongin showed his middle finger after the latter finished delivering his liquidation speech on the proposed allocation to the ministry under the budget .

Rayer said that after Willie delivered his closing speech, he made an obscene gesture to opposition lawmakers that was witnessed by about 10 opposition MPs.

“He showed his middle finger, this is an insult especially for the deputies among women. Please ask him to apologize, ”Rayer said.

Willie denied making such a gesture when asked by spokesman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun to explain the allegations.

“This accusation is not true, if the opposition parliamentarians assume that I did such an act, I am ready to apologize,” he said.

Kasthuri Patto (PH-Batu Kawan) claimed that Datuk Dr. Noraini Ahmad (BN-Parit Sulong) had witnessed Willie’s alleged action.

“You saw him when you asked him to calm down and you asked him to calm down,” he said.

Azhar ignored the ongoing commotion and adjourned the day’s session.

During his liquidation speech, Willie was at odds with opposition MPs when he explained why the rubber plantation industry was spared the imposition of a windfall tax.

The ministry’s allocation of RM 476.67 million was approved after recording a result of 108-95 votes in favor of the government.
