KUALA LUMPUR: Lawmakers with positions in government-linked companies (GLC) or government-linked investment firms (GLIC) should accept a 50% pay cut and savings should be channeled to the Covid-19 Fund, suggests Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The former deputy prime minister and deputy from Pandan said the prime minister, senior ministers and deputy ministers should also accept a 10% pay cut.

“This pay cut should be taken as corporate social responsibility and distributed to the Covid-19 fund.

“All of these legislators have already been paid. They must lead by example,” he said while debating the 2021 budget in Parliament on Tuesday (November 17).

Dr. Wan Azizah also proposed the formation of a special select committee of the bipartisan Parliament to analyze the policies, spending and administrative aspect related to Covid-19.

The special selection committee, he added, should function until the end of the pandemic is declared.

He noted that there were several aspects of the 2021 Budget that could be improved, including the allocation for leaders.

“For example, the allocation for front-line workers is not complete, as some had complained that the procedure for claiming overtime was complicated and difficult.

“Other than that, we should consider changing their status from contract staff to permanent,” he said.

He also suggested that the families of the avant-garde should also receive incentives.

Dr Wan Azizah, who is also a former Minister for Women, Family and Community Development, said the budget must ensure gender equality, including protection from gender-based violence and worker safety.

It also welcomed the allocation of RM24mil to address mental health issues and efforts to curb violence during this period.
