A regional Volkswagen spare parts center has been established in Tanjung Pelapas.

KUALA LUMPUR: German automaker Volkswagen Group has established a new regional parts distribution center at the Tanjung Pelepas port in Johor to supply 21 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

A joint statement by Volkswagen and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority said the center, which occupies 50,000 square meters, can store more parts and thus expand the scope and depth for better parts availability.

It is located in the free zone with direct connectivity to the port. The new facility is also adapted to the requirements of the Volkswagen Group.

International Trade Minister Azmin Ali said there had been a trend towards the establishment of many regional and global distribution centers in Malaysia in industries such as automotive, life sciences and medical devices, electricity and electronics, and machinery and equipment.

Volkswagen Group sales manager Dr. Christian Dahlheim said that the Asia-Pacific region offers great growth potential for the group, especially for electric vehicles.

“Malaysia offers a central and well-connected location that perfectly fits our plans to expand our presence in the region,” he said.

There are 65,000 parts for Audi and Skoda passenger cars and Volkswagen commercial and passenger vehicles.

“Our new parts distribution center in Malaysia undoubtedly strengthens the Volkswagen Group’s global aftermarket supply chain, a key milestone in supplying improved original parts to our customers in Asia Pacific,” he said.

“We were pleased with the ease of implementing our project here and the support provided by MIDA,” said the group’s head of after-sales, Roman Havlásek.

The group’s project was facilitated by the global trade center scheme, announced in the 2021 budget, to encourage multinational corporations and local businesses to establish their global and regional distribution centers.
