When it comes to the wow factor for smartphone design today; We are often limited to how curved the screen is, how the front camera is positioned, and how many rear cameras it would have. Thanks to a recently leaked video, we might finally be getting something a little more exciting on future phones in the near future.

Uploaded by serial leaker IceUniverse on Twitter is a short video clip featuring what appears to be a prototype smartphone that features a color-changing back case. The case starts out dark blue, gradually changing to metallic gray or silver. Based on our observation, this cool effect is probably triggered manually. You can see two instances in the video when its color starts to change after the user presses the side of the phone where the lock button is usually located.

The leaker did not reveal how the video was acquired or specify the company responsible for this color-changing back box technology. Instead, it simply pointed out that it is developed by a “mobile phone brand.” Users who responded to the IceUniverse tweet launched their speculation, with some even claiming that the technology belongs to companies such as OnePlus, Huawei or Nubia. Until it is officially confirmed by a smartphone brand, we cannot know for sure who owns this new technology.

Interestingly, the XDA editor Mishaal rahman noted that the color-changing casing uses electrochromic glass technology. He also noted that it is the same technology that is used to hide the rear cameras in the OnePlus Concept One smartphone that was demonstrated at CES2020 earlier this year.

It is unknown when this new color-changing technology will debut on the market, but it is likely to be part of an upcoming flagship smartphone from a major brand. If not this year, maybe 2021 and beyond. Not forgetting that this new device probably also has a high price. But regardless, this new technology definitely looks great.
