PETALING JAYA: Dewan Rakyat’s Vice President Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon has condemned French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent comments on Islam.

“As Vice President, I strongly condemn any form of attack, incitement and anti-Islamic sentiment, as well as insults to the Prophet Muhammad,” he said in a statement on Friday (October 30).

The vice president added that the French satirical magazine Charlie hebdo He continued to act provocatively by posting anti-Islamic content and cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, which angered Muslims around the world.

He also said that Macron’s statement accused Islam and practitioners of being separatists, and that it was a religion “hit by a crisis” around the world.

“I have always rejected the practices and insults to the Prophet Muhammad, Christianity and even Judaism because we reject any wrongdoing in the name of religion.

“As we know, Islam rejects all forms of tyranny, oppression, cruelty and violence,” he said.

Macron’s comments came as France was rocked by the gruesome murder of history professor Samuel Paty on October 16.

He allegedly showed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad to students in a class discussion on freedom of expression, news agencies reported.

Macron praised Paty as a “hero” for representing the secular and free-thinking values of the French Republic, which include a much-cherished right to scoff at religion.

The anger of his comments has prompted several Muslim countries to call for a boycott of products made in France.
