VAR dominates Moyes’ frustrated reaction despite West Ham win at Leeds

David Moyes made his VAR frustrations known in his post-match reaction following West Ham’s 2-1 win over Leeds at Elland Road.

The Hammers were left behind with an early penalty from Mateusz Klich after Patrick Bamford was brought down by Lukasz Fabianski. However, Tomas Soucek leveled before the break and Angelo Ogbonna headed in a goal on goal in the 79th minute.

The three points make them climb to fifth place in the league, but Moyes the focus was on the decision to allow Leeds to re-take their penalty.

Indeed, Klich saw his first attempt stopped by Fabianski, but the goalkeeper had gotten in front of his line before making the save. That was stopped by VAR, and Michael Oliver was instructed to give Leeds a second bite of the cherry.

And without any suggestions in his interview with Sky Sports, Moyes soon brought up the subject.

When asked what he thought of the West Ham exhibition, he said: “I was pleased. I think you should speak for the goal, the penalty. There is not much I can say, you better let the referees speak about it. Anyway, great performance from the players, really good ”.

Moyes was then asked how satisfied he was by his players’ response to falling behind. Once again, however, the sanction was the focus of his response.

“I think we played very well tonight against a good team from Leeds who is difficult to play against.

David Moyes FUE West Ham TEAMtalk

“But until we clarify the rules, I don’t think I’m going to be too happy. But it really doesn’t matter what I say, maybe there are more influential managers [who will] make a difference with what they say. “

Finally, the Scotsman was asked if he thought the decision to let Leeds get back to grief was a tough one. In response, Moyes said, “It’s probably better than [the media] talk about it, because soccer is no longer talked about. You are arguing VAR decisions all the time.

“You better ask me about football and I will try to answer those questions as best I can.”

West Ham ‘in a good position’

Having entered the match in eighth place, the result saw West Ham go up three positions to fifth. That puts them ahead of Manchester City, Manchester United and Southampton until tomorrow at least.

It was also his sixth win in 12 games this season, a much better start compared to recent years.

And while Moyes downplayed that, he seemed content with what his team has done so far.

“I think we are in a good position,” he added. “We have won some games, but nothing more.

“But I think this group of players is capable and I think we have played well against many teams. We are showing that we compete, which is very important to me. “

The London club will hope to continue their good season opener when take on Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
