PETALING JAYA: Chief Health Officer Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah has raised concerns about the growing public disregard for Covid-19 standard operating procedures, noting that even those at the forefront are becoming careless .
The country registered 100 new cases of Covid-19 today, the highest number since June 4, when there were 277 new infections.
Stating that the Ministry of Health has seen an increase in movement within communities, Noor Hisham reminded leaders of their key role in preventing infections.
“The (health ministry) advice is starting to be taken lightly, and this also includes frontline workers who are health workers and also from other agencies,” he said.
“Those in front are at a higher risk of becoming infected with Covid-19 or other infectious diseases while in health facilities.
“Plus, they can also get infected while in the community, just like anyone else.”
Noting that Malaysia’s infection rate, or R0 (pronounced R-zero), has risen from 0.72 to 1.72 in just two weeks, Noor Hisham said the “significant increase” points towards a higher risk of more broadcasts within the community.
Reminding leaders that “100% compliance” with guidelines and procedures is critical at all times, Noor Hisham warned that failure to comply with Covid-19 preventive measures could have dire consequences.
“For example, today there was a health worker from the Sungai group who had infected seven members of the family,” said Noor Hisham.
“We must take all precautions and take care of ourselves and our families at all times.”
