KOTA KINABALU: A video of healthcare workers dressed in personal protective equipment (PPE) singing and dancing the Sumazau for patients at a Covid-19 quarantine center in Sabah has gone viral.

Some short videos, believed to have been taken at the Penampang Cultural Center near here, showing a health worker singing a popular local number called “Original Sabahan” and his co-workers dancing to the sound, have been circulating since yesterday on the night.

Also seen in one of the videos are what are believed to be patients dancing Sumazau, or a traditional Kadazan dance, while health workers entertained them with the song at the 100-bed center.

A medical staff who declined to be named said the workers had only wanted to encourage patients as well as other leaders at the center.

“They never intended for the video to go viral. It seemed that a patient had also recorded his performance and shared it online and that’s how it went viral. “

The worker said the team was aware of the emotional and mental stress suffered by patients and other colleagues, so they came up with the idea.

“Everything was well intentioned and the team hoped it would more or less brighten everyone’s day.”
