UUM says the conferences will be held online and those already on campus will not be able to leave.

PETALING JAYA: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has closed its campus in Sintok, Kedah, for four days to stop the transmission of Covid-19.

A staff member working on campus told the FMT that several students may have tested positive, but “we were not informed about the actual number of infected cases.”

“We hope that the university will inform us,” he said.

In an internal memo dated Oct. 4 seen by FMT, the university advised all staff to work from home from today through Thursday.

“This is to curb the transmission of Covid-19 on campus and surrounding areas,” the circular said, adding that all conferences will be held online.

He said that personnel offering essential services, such as the cafeteria, bank, supermarket and other commercial premises on campus, will be allowed entry, while others will be prohibited from entering.

“Students are not allowed in unless they have permission from the rector,” he said.

UUM said students who are already on campus will not be able to leave the university.

“For those with families, only the head of the household will be able to purchase essential items that are not available on campus,” he said.

The memo said that Yayasan Al-Bukhary students will be monitored 24 hours a day and no one will be allowed to leave the building.

He also recommended that all staff and students with symptoms of Covid-19 perform medical swabs.

Meanwhile, Kubang Pasu Deputy Chief of Police Chien Chunng Tsaur said that 10 UUM students tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday and were sent to Alor Setar Hospital.

The affected students, he said, were part of the UUM’s Reserve Training Officers Unit (Palapes).

He said the new cases at UUM brought the total number of cases on campus to 11, with the previous case registered on October 2.

The above case involved a student who arrived from Sabah on September 20. Chien said the student was not cleaned upon arrival at the airport. However, he did not mention which airport it was.

He said the main campus of the UUM will be closed as of noon today for precautions, while a student hostel, called Inapan Siswa Yayasan AlBukhary, will also be closed to outsiders.
