PETALING JAYA: Students from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) have been told to register online for their new semester.

This comes in the wake of the recent spike in Covid-19 cases across the country, the university said in a Facebook post on Thursday (October 1).

USM has asked all of its students, both new and current, to register online and postpone their trips to campus.

The registration procedures will be announced through their official channels.

“New students who are already on their way to campus to register on Friday (October 2) can postpone their trip and return to campus on a new date to be announced later,” USM said.

Existing students, however, must postpone their trip and can only register online.

Verifications with USM’s division of development affairs showed that new students have the option of registering on campus and then going home or staying while they wait for more information.

They can also drop off their belongings and sign in, or leave their belongings on campus and go home.

Last Sunday (September 27), Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr. Noraini Ahmad said: “All higher education institutions are requested to postpone face-to-face registration of new and old students from areas of the red zone on their respective campuses, which is scheduled to begin in October. “

It added in a statement that these students, both new and current, would have to register online for their semesters.

These students, he said, can only return to their campuses following standard operating procedures (SOPs) once the Covid-19 situation has recovered in their places of origin.
