Use emergency powers for disasters only, says Sarawak minister

PBB Vice President Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah says he hopes that talking about an emergency is just speculation.

KUCHING: A Sarawak minister says that an emergency should only be declared when there is a major disaster, such as an earthquake, drought or flood, and not to avoid a vote of no confidence in Parliament.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Vice President Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the federal government must give a strong reason to justify any emergency declaration, as speculated today.

“I personally do not agree if the emergency is to address political instability or for fear of a vote of no confidence. We shouldn’t stop the opposition parties (in this way), so I hope it’s just speculation, ”he told reporters today.

Karim said that any emergency declaration due to Covid-19 should exclude Sarawak. “We have been reporting a low number of cases for the past few weeks,” he said.
