LOS ANGELES: A 45-year-old nurse in California tested positive for Covid-19 more than a week after receiving the coronavirus vaccine from Pfizer Inc, an ABC News affiliate reported Tuesday.
Matthew W, a nurse at two different local hospitals, said in a Facebook post on Dec. 18 that he had received the Pfizer vaccine and told the ABC News affiliate that his arm hurt for a day but had no other side effects.
Six days later, on Christmas Eve, he fell ill after working a shift at the Covid-19 unit, the report added. It gave him chills and later he had muscle aches and fatigue.
He went to a testing site at a hospital and tested positive for Covid-19 the day after Christmas, according to the report.
Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist at the San Diego Family Health Centers, told the ABC News affiliate that this scenario was not unexpected.
“We know from clinical trials of the vaccine that it will take 10 to 14 days to start developing the vaccine’s protection,” Ramers said.
“We think that first dose gives you about 50%, and you need that second dose to get up to 95%,” Ramers added.
