SERDANG: The United States (US) Ambassador-designate to Malaysia, Brian McFeeters (pix) said he is very impressed by Malaysia’s responses to Covid-19.

He said these include efforts to prevent the spread of the virus and treat Covid-19 patients, as well as the vaccination program.

“The whole world is facing the challenge of this crisis, all countries are doing the best they can. I think Malaysia, from what I understand, I am not an expert, but Malaysia is doing a wonderful job, “he said.

McFeeters spoke to reporters after witnessing the delivery of the United States contribution to the Covid-19 Integrated Treatment and Quarantine Center (PKRC) 2.0 at Malaysia’s Serdang Agro Exhibition Park (MAEPS) here today.

The donation, consisting of Covid-19 test kits and personal protective equipment (PPE) totaling $ 75,000 (RM 309,000), was provided by the US Department of Defense, Indo-Pacific Command. United States (USINDOPACOM) Humanitarian, Disaster and Civic Affairs Office of Aid (OHDACA).

“I hope this donation of PPE and rapid test kit benefits the leaders. I hope this donation is a recognition of our longstanding close relationship and joint effort to provide humanitarian assistance during the crisis, ”said Mc Feeters, in fluent Malay.

He said that American companies in Malaysia have also been active, with more than RM7 million contributed to Covid-19 relief efforts over the past year.

McFeeters said the US is committed to Covid-19 global relief efforts, and the country has pledged $ 4 billion through 2022 and half has already turned over to COVAX, making it the largest contributor. to the effort of COVAX.

On the relationship between the United States and Malaysia, he said that aside from the Covid-19 pandemic, the embassy is focused on building stronger ties between the two countries in any way possible.

“The three main areas are the economic relationship, the security relationship and the ties between people, such as exchange programs, education and learning about the systems of others, which perhaps include members of the Malaysian parliament visiting the Congress of Malaysia. the USA and things like that.

“So we are working in these areas even now and especially after Covid-19,” he said.

In terms of economic ties, McFeeters said the two countries have very impressive and ongoing relationships with about $ 60 billion in trade each year.

He said the United States has also invested about $ 10 billion in Malaysia, which created about 100,000 jobs for Malaysians.
