Upko fights to get rid of Warisan’s migrant bogeyman at the heart of KDM

SURVEYS OF SABAH | Warisan, since its founding in 2016, has made unprecedented electoral progress in Sabah, particularly in the Muslim Bumiputera coastal areas.

In this Sabah election, Warisan is now also trying to make inroads into non-Muslim bumiputera areas, but finds himself struggling with a “bogeyman” problem similar to that of the DAP in Peninsular Malaysia.

Warisan, demonized by opponents as a party of “undocumented immigrants” in the Kadazan Dusun Murut (KDM) community, is counting on his new KDM-based ally Upko to enlist the support of the non-Muslim bumiputera community.

But Warisan’s fear as an “undocumented migrant bogeyman” is having an indirect effect on Upko, who is fighting to get rid of the association while working on the KDM field.

Sabah BN President Bung Moktar Radin also played on this fear, comparing Warisan’s motto “In God we trust, we must unite” with a Filipino catchphrase, though “in God we trust”, or “To believe in God“In Malay, it is contained in the Rukun Negara.

The situation is no different from the demonization of the DAP as an “anti-Malay and anti-Muslim” party in Peninsular Malaysia, so much so that the allies that associate with it are painted as puppets serving the DAP agenda.
