One month after the last major network outage, several Celcom customers are now experiencing problems accessing the Internet on their mobile devices. Based on complaints, it appears that the problem had started this morning.

Celcom is currently trending on Twitter and a significant number of users complained of not being able to open websites and Google. Other apps like YouTube, Grab, and Food Panda seem to be affected as well. It is not clear how extensive the problem is, but it appears to be sporadic.

According to the tweets, Celcom’s data services are not completely down as some apps like Facebook are reported to be accessible.

At the time of writing, our Yoodo line, which uses the Celcom network, appears to be unaffected at Petaling Jaya.

Celcom is aware of the problem and is working to resolve it as soon as possible. According to Celcom’s website, they have announced that customers in some areas of the country may find their data services affected due to a technical problem. They advised affected customers to reboot their devices.

By the looks of it, Celcom had faced a similar outage last night (November 4, 2020) between 10:10 PM and 8:54 AM. The issue was resolved and they also urged customers to restart their devices if the issue persists.

We contacted Celcom for further clarification. We will update this post once we receive more information.

This is Celcom’s sixth major outage that we covered in 2020. Prior to today’s issue, the blue telco had experienced a nationwide data service outage in July, August, and October.

The last major network problem at Celcom occurred on October 4 and also affected all data services for a significant number of clients across the country for 3 hours. As a token of appreciation for their clients’ patience, they had offered unlimited free data for 6 hours on two different days.

Celcom CEO Idham Nawawi had revealed that the October 4 network outage was caused by a software bug in a router that prevented its network from recovering within minutes after a power outage. After the incident, Idham says they have fixed the bug and will review all other elements of the network, including its power systems, backups and uninterruptible power supply.
