Unity was always our theme, says PKR youth leader

KOTA KINABALU: A PKR youth leader questioned Warisan’s “Unity” issue today, just as the Sabah-based party is about to spread its wings to the peninsula.

PKR’s state head of youth information, Razeef Rakimin, who has spoken out against Warisan several times before, said the issue, which Warisan just took up, has been the backbone of PKR since its inception in 1999.

He said the party has worked diligently over the years to build its image as a political team made up of members of various races and religions, adding that it now has more than a million members in the 222 divisions across the country.

“The unity instilled by PKR also translates into Pakatan Harapan (PH).

“As a result, with our logo bearing the symbol of unity in the XIV general election, we (PH) managed to defeat Barisan Nasional (BN),” he said in a statement.

However, he said this contrasts with the situation in Sabah, where the Warisan-PH alliance, led by the former, failed to do so in the general elections. Upko, however, left the BN fold to eventually form the state government with Warisan and PH.

He said this failure was repeated in recent state elections in which, even though Warisan and its president Shafie Apdal focused heavily on the issue of unity, it failed to win the mandate of the people after Warisan Plus lost before the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah coalition.

“This was not used by PKR as a point of bragging. Instead, the party always kept the space for other members of the opposition to be with PH and then recover the mandate taken by the traitors in Perikatan Nasional “.

At the same time, Razeef added, PH was willing to engage at the state level and allow Warisan the opportunity to once again lead the opposition front.

“PH will always open the channel for negotiations as long as the opposition MPs have no personal agendas or try to divide the coalition.”

Razeef had previously criticized Warisan after his MPs failed to participate in budget votes, as well as when Shafie called for a complete change in the leadership of the national opposition.

He had also questioned Warisan’s spirit of unity when he decided to run for the seats PKR had previously announced that he would run in previous state elections.

Shafie had said last week that Warisan was going to go national after a proposal was approved during their annual meeting (AGM). During the AGM, the party leaders had said that the issue of unity would prevail on the peninsula.
