KUALA NERUS (Bernama): Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (Unisza) will be closed for three days starting Monday (October 5) after a member of its staff tested positive for Covid-19, says its vice chancellor, Professor Datuk, Dr. Hassan Basri Awang Mat. Dahan.

It said the closure involved its three campuses, namely the Gong Badak campus (Kuala Nerus), the Medicine campus (Kuala Terengganu) and the Besut campus (Besut).

During the closure, the teaching and learning process will take place online to ensure the safety of students and employees.

“As a control measure, Unisza has decided that all staff will work from home between October 5 and 7 to allow for comprehensive disinfection activities,” it said in a statement on Sunday (October 4).

He said the directive covered all administrative operations except personnel in essential services such as security, health, finance, student affairs and residential colleges, subject to the approval of the vice chancellor.

According to Dr. Hassan Basri, the Covid-19 positive employee has a history of air travel from Kuala Lumpur to Terengganu, and was on the same flight with a returnee from Sabah who was later diagnosed with the disease.

Following the case, 14 Unisza staff members were tracked down as close contacts of the patient, and have since been placed under surveillance and quarantine on orders from the Health Ministry.

Other Unisza staff who had had contact with the quarantined staff were also instructed to self-quarantine for two weeks beginning October 2.

“Since the motion control order was implemented in March, Unisza has taken steps to postpone all physical programs until the situation returns to normal.

“Unisza has also mobilized a trained counseling team and an active wellness unit to assist affected staff and families,” he said.

Dr. Hassan Basri said there are now 584 students on campus, and assured that all of their needs and well-being will be taken care of. – Bernama
