PETALING JAYA: Umno must find ways to become the leading party and head the Federal Government once again, says Datuk Seri Najib Razak (Photo).
The former president of Umno said the party must first have a winning mentality, followed by clear planning and implementation to re-lead the federal government.
“Umno is not formed to become a second violin or simply to be a supporting party,
“And what else to become an opposition party.
“Umno was formed to become the leading party. We are here to lead, not to be led,” he said in his speech at Pekan’s division meeting, which was shown live on his Facebook page on Sunday (3 of January).
He said Umno risks losing his popularity and rakyat support if he continues like this.
“We must realize that from the beginning of Umno, we have always been the leading party.
“If we take what is happening to us in the last nine months as a new norm or a new reality, it will actually quietly kill Umno.
“We will continue to be a mere component of the government coalition, despite playing an important role in supporting the current government.
“However, we are still considered as ‘an adopted child’. So, we will wait until the end of Umno,” added the former prime minister.
Najib warned Umno delegates that they must get out of the “vicious cycle” of lack of confidence to rebuild the party.
“We not only need a winning mentality, but we also materialize a winning mentality for our strategies at all levels,” he said.
He regretted that Umno no longer holds key cabinet posts, although the party helped the government stay in power.
“The main cabinet positions, such as the finance minister or those related to the economy, are not held by the ministers of Umno.
“Any kind of government success will be credited to others, while when there is failure, it will be collective,” he said.
Despite saying that Umno has “hit rock bottom,” the former Umno president said the party needed new forces and not to be left in political limbo.
“The 14th General Election showed that the majority of Malaysians still favor us, and no other party based in Malaysia can compete with us in terms of parliamentary seats,” said the deputy from Pekan.
He also reprimanded those who had skipped out of Umno’s party after winning their seats based on the party ticket and using Umno’s machinery.
“Our biggest challenge after 2018 is that the ‘frog culture’ has become part of Umno.
“They won with Umno tickets based on the support of our members and our machinery, but out of self-interest, and they even ‘kicked’ us while we were down.
“Now they want us to help and support them to keep their position,” he added.
