KUALA LUMPUR: A special meeting of the Umno supreme council ended in the early hours of Friday (October 30) with a statement that the party remains committed to the current administration and would ensure that the federal budget is approved in Parliament.

There was no talk of a cabinet shakeup amid speculation that members of the supreme council would be trying to reach an agreement with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the 2021 Budget is anticipated next Friday (Nov 6). .

Instead, party chairman Datuk Seri, Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said that Umno has taken into account people’s hopes that the 2021 budget includes an extension of the bank loan moratorium, special payments to which they are at the forefront as well as financial aid for unemployed youth and people. in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Umno will ensure that the 2021 Budget is passed, which benefits the people,” he said.

Zahid also confirmed that all Umno ministers will remain committed to the current administration.

“All members of the Cabinet representing Umno will remain in government and will be committed to the welfare of the people,” he said.

He said that Umno reiterates that general elections should only be held once the Covid-19 pandemic has alleviated and is under control, to return the mandate to the rakyat for a stable government.

Zahid added that Umno remained committed to a political ceasefire and national reconciliation to ensure peace and political stability.

“Umno also reiterates in clear terms that it defends the decree of the Malaysian king and rulers to ensure that the country’s administration is properly managed and governed by the rule of law in the spirit of the Constitution, and not to declare a state of emergency in the nation as proposed by the government.

He added that Umno would take action against any party that questions his decision to uphold the King’s decree.

The four-hour meeting that began Thursday night (October 29) came after another supreme council meeting on October 26 promised continued party support for Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional administration, which has been under pressure. on various fronts.

Talks have emerged in recent days about a cabinet shakeup after certain party leaders complained of being marginalized by Muhyiddin.

It is speculated that the reorganization centered on the appointment of a deputy prime minister of Umno.

Among the names that ventured were Vice President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Vice President Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former Vice President Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah recently urged lawmakers to stop politicking to avoid destabilizing the nation.

The King also asked lawmakers to focus their efforts on fighting the Covid-19 pandemic and approving the 2021 Budget, which will be presented at Dewan Rakyat on November 6.
