INTERVIEW | About 20 years ago, Marzuki Yahya, then a corporate figure in the shipping industry, took the first step on his political journey by joining Umno and then rising through the ranks of its Youth wing to become one of its core members of exco in 2004.
He then left the largest political party in the country to become a founding member of his splinter party, Bersatu.
Marzuki began to make headlines after being appointed Bersatu’s general secretary in 2018, especially after he was involved in an internal power struggle in the party and was eventually fired for siding with then-party chairman Dr. Mahathir. Mohamad.
Now part of Mahathir’s new party, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air, as its interim vice president, spoke with Malaysiakini in an exclusive interview about his political journey and his vision of the current issues surrounding the country’s politics, including the future of Pejuang.
Malaysiakini: You were appointed Senator and Vice Minister when Pakatan Harapan took office. But after the political fight in Bersatu, he chose to fight the party president and was eventually fired. Why did you choose this path and regret something?
Marzuki: What is most important to me is defending my principles. It is useless to have a position but to go against what we are fighting. And what good is holding a government position when it is not a legitimate government? It does not matter if we become a minister or a deputy minister if the government is not the one the rakyat voted for.
