Umno will decide on his support for PPBM and PN at the party’s general assembly on January 31.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Supreme Council of Umno has deferred any decision on the party’s support for the PPBM to its annual general assembly later this month.

The top decision-making body met tonight amid reports of a widening gap between notable party leaders over Umno’s continued support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

This latest development follows the majority of the 191 party divisions that asked Umno to withdraw its cooperation with the PPBM, and the firing of Ketereh MP Annuar Musa as Barisan Nasional (BN) general secretary yesterday.

In a statement, Umno’s chief information officer, Shahril Hamdan, said that tonight’s meeting had discussed motions raised by 189 party divisions across the country, including the question of the party withdrawing its support. to the PPBM.

Umno vice president Mohamad Hasan was among the leaders who attended the party’s supreme council meeting tonight.

Other motions include calling early elections by the end of March this year and strengthening the Muafakat Nasional (MN) alliance with PAS.

“The meeting then agreed to take the motions to the Umno general assembly on January 31, 2021 for debate and decision at the highest level of the party, as provided by the party constitution.”

Shahril added that the decision was made because the issue touched on fundamental party policies that would have important implications for the party and the country.

He also said that the party’s constitution had established that motions submitted by party divisions must be discussed in the general assembly.
