Members of the media wait in vain for the Umno-PAS meeting at the Putra World Trade Center tonight.

KUALA LUMPUR: A highly anticipated meeting of the leaders of Umno and PAS tonight was canceled and another meeting of the Supreme Council of Umno was postponed tomorrow, on the recommendation of the National Security Council.

Annuar Musa, a member of the Supreme Council of Umno, said that tonight’s meeting was suspended at the last minute due to the increase in Covid-19 cases in the Klang Valley.

A meeting scheduled for tomorrow of the Umno Supreme Council, to be held in Janda Baik, Pahang, was also suspended due to MCO travel restrictions.

Both meetings were expected to have focused on supporting the federal government of Perikatan Nasional. Tonight’s meeting was expected to discuss PPBM’s membership in the Muafakat Nasional alliance between Umno and PAS.

Annuar, who is deputy secretary general of MN, said that “some members of the supreme council attended (tonight) but it was canceled at the last minute by the advice of MKN (the security council).”

Those present at the meeting were believed to be Umno Vice President Mohamad Hasan and Women’s Chief Noraini Ahmad, as well as PAS Deputy Pasir Puteh Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh, among others.

The meetings are held at a time when Umno’s support for the PN government is being questioned. At the same time, the president of the PKR, Anwar Ibrahim, who is the leader of the opposition, has gone to see the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to insist on his claim of majority support to form a new government. Some MPs from Umno are believed to be involved.

Earlier this week, Umno Secretary General Ahmad Maslan said the party was deliberating on a PN government withdrawal and was expected to submit a list of demands in writing to PN President Muhyiddin Yassin, after the supreme council meeting on Tuesday.

However, it emerged tonight that the meeting at Janda Baik, Pahang was postponed to a later date due to travel restrictions under the conditional movement control order and the increase in Covid-19 cases.
