Former Prime Minister Najib Razak said Umno never intended to play a supporting role from the moment it was formed in 1946.

PETALING JAYA: Former Prime Minister Najib Razak has told Umno leaders and members not to get used to the party’s supporting role in the current government administration, warning that this could slowly kill Umno.

“Today, we are just fans. As long as we have ministerial positions, we are happy, although the quality of the portfolio does not match Umno’s contributions to the current government.

“We have to go. If we stay, Umno will cease to be an influential party. We not only need a winning mentality, but we must translate that into a winning strategy at all levels,” he said in his speech during Pekan’s annual general meeting. Umno today.

Comparing his leadership role in the Alliance government in the early days and then in Barisan Nasional for nearly five decades, he said that Umno ministers did not hold positions related to economics and finance.

“Today, we cannot decide on the policies of the country. Any success of the government is attributed to others and not to us, ”he said.

Najib said that Umno had been a leading component in the federal government since its establishment in 1946 and was not destined to play a supporting role.

“If we take everything that has happened in the last nine months and accept it as the new norm or the new reality, we are actually slowly killing Umno.

“If Umno continues in this way, becoming just a component party of the government and being treated like a stepson, despite the leading role we play, then expect Umno’s demise.”

He said that Umno had always led the way in the agenda and direction of the government administration, while regretting that the role of the party today is not commensurate with the contribution it made to Putrajaya.
