PETALING JAYA: With the Sabah coalition leaders at a standstill over which of them should become the new chief minister of the state, the name of a former CM has been proposed as a stalemate.
Lokman Noor Adam, a former member of the Supreme Council of Umno, said that the new Usukan assemblyman, Salleh Said Keruak, was the best candidate among the newly elected assembly members.
He said that Salleh had enough experience to take office as he was previously the prime minister and had also been a federal minister.
The leaders of Sabah’s two largest coalitions were unable to agree on their candidate for the post of chief minister after Gabungan Rakyat Sabah won 38 seats by simple majority in the state assembly.
Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) President Bung Moktar Radin and PPBM Head of State Hajiji Noor have been nominated as candidates.
However, Governor Juhar Mahiruddin has yet to decide who will be invited to form a new state government. The state constitution empowers you to elect the person who, in your opinion, has the majority in the chamber.
The former ruling coalition of Warisan and its allies won 30 seats. Warisan President Shafie Apdal has maintained that her party has the largest number of seats in the state assembly.
Salleh, who ran in Usukan on a BN ballot, had recently rejoined Umno after losing the parliamentary seat to Kota Belud in the 2018 general election.
She lost by 4,300 votes to the leader of the Warisan women’s wing, Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis, in a four-way contest for the parliamentary seat.
Salleh applied for PKR in October 2019, but left in June of this year. He said last week: “I admit it, I made a mistake. Sorry. When I was away from the party, I felt lonely. I realized that wherever I went, BN never disappeared from my heart. “
