Umno leaders (from left) Mohamad Hasan, Shahidan Kassim, Tajuddin Abdul Rahman and Khairy Jamaluddin have sidelined Anwar Ibrahim’s claim that he has enough support to form a government.

PETALING JAYA: Umno MPs are skeptical of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement that he has the numbers to form a new government, describing it as “a gimmick.”

Umno Vice President Mohamad Hasan said Anwar “could be playing another game on 16 September 2008.”

“He is trying to reproduce a replay of September 16, 2008 or he is trying to influence Sabah voters in the state elections on Saturday,” he told FMT.

In 2008, Anwar had claimed that he had sufficient parliamentary support to overthrow the government and urged then-Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to resign from power peacefully.

Anwar then said that he failed after Abdullah rejected his proposal to convene a special Dewan Rakyat session.

Arau MP Shahidan Kassim told the FMT that he had just spoken by phone with MPs from Perikatan Nasional who were surprised by Anwar’s claim.

“They told me nothing is wrong. There is no problem. Even they don’t know where Anwar gets his numbers from. “

Shahidan says it could be a “trick” to influence Sabah voters to reject the PN on Saturday.

BN MP Pasir Salak, Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, asked Anwar to “bring the matter to Dewan Rakyat.”

“It is not enough to say you have the numbers. Outside Parliament she can say anything, but she has to wait for the Dewan Rakyat to start, ”she told the FMT.

Tajuddin urged Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to “focus on the political scene” and said early elections should be held. “Let the people decide once and for all.”

Rembau de Ummo’s MP and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said in a tweet that he had just finished attending a cabinet meeting and that “nothing has fallen.”

Earlier, Anwar had announced at a press conference that he has “majority support” for forming a new government and that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had agreed to grant him an audience, although this had to be postponed after the King was admitted to the National Congress. Heart Institute (IJN).
