JOHOR BAHRU: Umno is not pushing for the 15th General Election (GE15) to be held soon, but when the Covid-19 pandemic has decreased to a low number of cases.
His Vice President, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid (pix) said that taking into account the well-being of people in the face of the pandemic and floods currently hitting some states, these two issues were now the priority to be resolved compared to GE15.
He said that in the initial stage, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had indicated to keep GE15 fast after taking into account the gap between government members of Parliament and their counterparts in the Opposition as seen in the Budget 2021 vote.
“But with the Covid-19 situation currently at a critical level, we (Umno) ask that the next General Election be held when the contagion cases have reached a low level and that we are not emphasizing that the elections take place now. Currently, Johor and Pahang and, to some extent, Terengganu and Kelantan, are experiencing flooding.
“Let’s speak rationally, it is not for politics that we say that we want to hold the General Elections (soon). People are watching the behavior of politicians. So let’s look at the Covid-19 situation and any disasters first, and first we need to solve the problems people are facing, then we just go to the polls. “
He said this when meeting reporters after visiting Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s Senibong submarine cable main substation in Permas Jaya, here, today.
Mahdzir, who is also Chairman of TNB, commented on the views of various quarters that efforts to control the Covid-19 outbreak and the well-being of people facing the current flood situation should be given priority rather than policy maneuvering. to carry out GE15 soon.
Prior to this, Umno’s Chief Information Officer Shahril Hamdan had said that meetings of the party’s divisional delegates had urged that GE15 be held before the end of the first quarter of this year to obtain a new mandate from the party. people, but this should depend on the current Covid-19 situation. – Called
