Revenge or repetition? Revenge or repetition? Revenge or repetition?
That was the big question going into UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi on Fight Island, but we finally got our answer.
Revenge.
Dustin Poirier has defeated Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 257, sending shockwaves through the entire UFC and the lightweight division in the process.
Heading into the fight as an underdog, there were still some corners of the fighting world that believed ‘The Diamond’ could get the job done and cause some discomfort. After all, this is not the same Dustin Poirier who was knocked out by Conor McGregor in the first round in 2014.
The American has come a long way since then, scoring very impressive victories in the process, and now has the biggest victory of his career to date.
Beating McGregor not only means Poirier has finally put his ghosts to sleep, it has also improved his professional record to 27-6- (1). The one he did not contest was when his fight with Eddie Alvarez was stopped and he was fired due to illegal knee strikes.
As for McGregor, his record now stands at 22 wins and five losses, this being his third in the UFC after losses to Nate Diaz and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Speaking of the Russian, it will be interesting to see if he saw enough of Poirier to justify coming out of retirement and setting foot inside the Octagon for the last time.
Only time will tell, but Khabib vs Poirier 2 for the UFC Lightweight Championship is a pretty exciting prospect.
Perhaps, just perhaps, Poirier could complete another mission of revenge.
In the meantime, questions will be asked about what’s next for Conor McGregor … will he want to fight back inside the Octagon? Will your attention turn to boxing? Or will he just retire from combat sport altogether?
Who else is ready for a Poirier vs McGregor trilogy …?
